Sao Paolo celebrations are a must for backpackers

20/11/2007

Backpackers planning a trip to Brazil in January are advised to schedule their trip to take in anniversary celebrations in Sao Paulo.

As well as street parties, the showpiece of every year's event, which is held on January 25th, is a specially baked cake, the length of which is dictated by the anniversary being celebrated.

Hence, with this year's anniversary being the city's 454, attendees will be treated to the sight of a 454 metre long confection.

There will also be the opportunity to sample more manageable cakes, with visitors to the Bixiga neighbourhood frequently offered pieces free of charge.

Should you stick around in the city after the celebrations, you'll be able to witness the celebrated modern architect Oscar Niemeyer's brand of sensual modernism in the form of a host of buildings dotted around the lush surrounds of Ibirapuera Park.

Meanwhile, the Bienal de Sao Paolo brings art and culture to the city on a grand scale later in the year, while the Gay Pride Parade, which attracts around 2.5 million people annually, bears testament to the city's enlightened attitude.
