Road trip tourists urged to check insurance

09/11/2007

UK travellers have been urged to check their car and motorbike insurance before embarking upon a road trip in Europe.

According to the RAC, UK drivers are three times more likely to be involved in an accident in Spain and Portugal than they are overseas.

This, coupled with the fact that many will be doing so without travel insurance, means that many Brits are putting themselves in great danger.

Compounding the problem, according to esure, is the fact even those who have taken out travel insurance may find that their policy does not provide the same level of cover for an accident in the EU as it does in the UK.

Adrian Webb, head of corporate communications for esure, said: "Don't ever take on a car abroad without having checked that there's an insurance policy in place for that car that covers you.

"Otherwise you'll be in for a very nasty shock. There's a history of people making assumptions and coming up a cropper with foreign use of cars."
