Regional airport has record breaking year

East Midlands Airport saw its highest number of passengers pass through the hub last year, 14.5 per cent more than 2006.

The total number of passengers using the regional airport was over 5.4 million, with a large rise being seen in December alone.

Penny Coates, managing director, said: "This record increase in passengers demonstrates the demand in the region for local access to air travel."

She went on to say that she was "delighted with the public response" and the airport wanted to continue to build on this performance for the coming year.

New routes have been available this year, with Ryanair flying to five new destinations in Europe, including Belfast, Alicante and Tenerife.

Airtours also launched a long-haul service to Jamaica while Scandinavian airline Sterling started flying from the airport.

The Civil Aviation Authority has recently reported that regional airports are growing faster than London-based ones, handling 42 per cent of all UK travellers.
