Poland is a hot new travel spot says national newspaper

13/01/2010

The former eastern bloc country of Poland has been singled out as a 'destination of the decade' by a national newspaper, but not only because it offers cheap beer and accommodation for stag parties and hen weekends.

According to The Guardian, Poland also offers chic shopping and nightlife, fantastic culture and beautiful countryside.

Other countries included in The Guardian's 'Destinations of the decade' include Colombia, Cambodia, Croatia, Kazakhstan and...ermmm...Wales (www.visitwales.co.uk).

The opening of 'chic boutique hotels and B&Bs, gastro pubs and new arts venues secured Wales a place on the list alongside more exotic countries such as Argentina, China and Mozambique.

Cardiff's recent facelift, including the opening of the Millennium Centre and stadium, the new National Theatre and St David's £3m Oriel y Parc (www.orielyparc.co.uk) landscape centre, were also mentioned as reasons to visit the country.

With its stunning beaches and national parks, Wales boasts some of the most beautiful corners in the UK, says the report (www.guardian.co.uk/travel/gallery/2009/dec/18/new-destinations-noughties-decade-review?picture=357046324). It still rains a lot, of course."

The newspaper admits Ryanair's (www.ryanair.com) flights for less than the cost of a pint have fuelled demand for Poland's top cities, Warsaw and Krakow.

Acting Director of the Polish National Tourist Office (www.poland.travel/en-gb/) Bogdan Becla said: "Poland really is a wonderful choice for a holiday, whether that's a weekend city break or a longer two-week holiday.

"Poland isn't just a destination of the past decade, but it will be a destination of choice for years to come."
