Parents consider selling house to fly son without travel insurance home

A man from Kent is seriously ill in a hospital in Indonesia following a motorbike accident; his parents are facing a bill of tens of thousands of pounds to fly him home.

The parents of Richard Plummer, 32 who is currently in a coma have been told that it will cost £98,000 to bring their son home; this is on top of the £22,000 they have already spent on medical bills as their son didn’t have travel insurance. The cost includes flying Richard on a plane equipped with specialist medical equipment.

An important element of travel insurance is that it provides cover should you need medical assistance, or repatriation back to the UK. Accidents or illness when abroad can leave a serious financial burden so make sure you are prepared and buy travel insurance before you travel.

Malcolm Tarling from the Association of British Insurers has said ‘As this case highlights, if you fall seriously ill abroad, medical bills can be absolutely horrendous, it’s this risk that makes travel insurance essential for anyone travelling overseas’.
