One-bag limit for scrapheap, BA claims

Regulations limiting passengers to one item of hand luggage each could be scrapped before Christmas, the chief executive of Britain's largest carrier has claimed.

Rules currently in place at UK airports stipulate that travellers can carry just one item of hand luggage. The rules were introduced in response to security concerns.

However, according to Willie Walsh, chief executive at British Airways (BA), the one-bag limit's days are numbered.

He said: "Good news for our customers will be the removal of restrictions on hand-baggage which we expect soon."

Mr Walsh issued the statement as BA released its latest interim results, showing an improvement in revenue to £593 million, compared with last year's figure of £471 million.

The improvement was attributed in part to improved sales of premium tickets, which helping to offset skyrocketing fuel prices.

Mr Walsh said: "Fuel costs remain a major challenge and our fuel bill for the year is expected to top 2 billion pounds for the first time."
