New Zealand wins travel award

24/10/2008

Winter travel insurance customers planning a trip abroad may be tempted by New Zealand following the news that it has been named one the UK's favourite destinations.

In a poll conducted by the Guardian and the Observer, New Zealand was voted UK holidaymakers' favourite long-haul destination in the Reader's travel Awards.

The country won the award in 2006 but was beaten to the title last year by Cambodia, Vietnam and Japan.

Commenting on the prize, New Zealand tourism minister Damien O'Conner said just under 290,000 people from the UK visited the country in the year to August 2008.

"For a small country and long-haul destination we are doing exceptionally well " Mr O'Conner asserted.

"Our international visitors are obviously extremely satisfied with the experiences they have had here " he added.

For those visiting the country, NZ.com recommends people take a raincoat even though the country's climate is "neither excessively hot nor cold".
