New runway planned for Stansted

11/03/2008

Stansted Airport could see the construction of a second runway following plans submitted to this week.

BAA has proposed the creation of a second runway to help the airport serve 68 million passengers each year by 2030.

Sir Nigel Rudd, chairman of BAA, said that the organisation was "proud to reach this significant milestone".

The project will meet the government's efforts to provide additional runway space in the south-east of England, he noted.

"This important project will bring huge benefits to the East of England and UK economy and will increase choice and opportunity for millions of business and leisure travellers," Sir Nigel claimed.

travel insurance customers may be interested to know that Stansted is the third busiest airport in the UK.

Some 32 scheduled and charter airlines operate from the airport, which sees 23.6 million passengers pass through its doors every year, flying to 158 destinations.
