More airports 'to use touch screen kiosks'

05/11/2007

Airport owners are backing touch screen service technology to reduce congestion and passenger waiting times, it has been claimed.

According to a spokesperson for the British Aviation Authority (BAA), more and more airports will be designed to incorporate touch screen self-service kiosks in future, with more and more airports' being designed with the technology in-mind.

He said: "With most modern airports, part of their design is centred around touch screen self-service, so most people will check-in online or at the airport with touch screen check-in, present their passport to the machine which will print their boarding cards.

"Then they can go to a fast bag drop, so instead of having to go through quite a long process, someone will just take their bags, put a sticker on it and put it in the baggage.

The benefits of the touch screen fittings are that "they increase speed", "can be quicker" and "take up much less room so you can put more kiosks in than check-in desks," the spokesperson added.

BAA recently confirmed that Heathrow's Terminal Five will be fitted with 200 touchscreen kiosks, which will be supplied by Protouch.
