Mauritius is 'popular with honeymooners and golfers'

04/04/2008

Mauritius is a popular destination for honeymooners and golfing fans, one industry expert has said this week.

Vijaye Haulder, deputy director of Mauritius' Tourism Promotion Authority, made the claims, adding that the Indian Ocean island reached the one million tourists mark this year.

He told TravelBizMonitor.com: "We hope to achieve a target of two million tourists by 2015…Europe is our biggest source market with more than 60 per cent of traffic [coming from there]."

"Mauritius is [particularly] popular with leisure travellers, honeymooners and golfers," he added.

According to Mr Haulder, the average tourists stays on the island for a minimum of ten days and spends around £750 per day.

Last month, travel writer Charlotte Cripps noted in the Times that Mauritius has become a hotspot for celebrity couples looking to soak up the sun.

Couples such as Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones have visited Mauritius as well as Liam Gallagher and Nicole Appleton.

She explained that the island's golfing, fishing and diving facilities make it the ideal location for lovebirds.
