Major Airlines Close Routes

06/04/2009

Europe's major airlines have closed 132 routes in the last year, according to research from new private jet company, Jet Republic, leaving passengers with less choice.

The firm claimed that only 4 of the 15 major airlines in its survey had opened more routes than they closed. Since March 2008, only 59 new routes were started, leaving a shortfall of 73 routes.

According to the International Air Transport Association, which represents most major airlines, there are 5% fewer seats available now than this time last year.

However, demand is expected to fall by more than 6% this year, which may lead to further cutbacks in the autumn.

Increases in Air Passenger Duty for most flights later this year, as announced by the Chancellor in his last pre-budget report, could further dampen demand for flights.

In such uncertain economic times, passengers are advised to consider taking out scheduled airline failure insurance, which is available as a bolt-on to the insurewithease standard travel insurance policy.

It costs just a few pounds extra but gives you the peace of mind of knowing that if your scheduled airline ceases flying before or during your trip, you won't be left stranded.
