Learn how to survive an avalanche on a British beach

10/09/2009

With the winter sports season approaching, skiers and boarders should be thinking about how to stay safe on the mountain. Winter sports travel insurance is crucial and knowing how to survive an avalanche is also vital for anyone planning to stray from the pistes.

Hence, The Ski Club of Great Britain has teamed up with winter sports retailer Snow+Rock and mountain safety experts Henrys Avalanche Talk (HAT) to teach skiers and boarders search and rescue techniques.

Training, which will include the use of transceivers to locate people buried in the snow, will take place throughout November on British beaches including Sandbanks in Dorset, Hayling Island, Hampshire and Formby, Merseyside.

""With safety and snowsports continuing to hit the headlines, people are realising how important it is to be aware of how to stay safe in the mountains, said Caroline Stuart Taylor, Chief Executive of the Ski Club.

One thing skiers may not realise is that standard travel insurance policies don't usually cover skiing and snowboarding – though the insurewithease multi-trip Gold policy does include winter sports travel insurance.

When looking for insurance specifically for a ski trip, remember to check for winter sports cover, which will cover your emergency medical bills and repatriation costs if you have an accident and protect expensive equipment.

When buying winter sports travel insurance, skiers also need to bear in mind that not all policies provide cover for off-piste. The Insurewithease winter sports travel insurance provides cover for off-piste skiing and boarding, as long as this takes place in recognised resort areas.
