Late bookers save money on holiday insurance

05/08/2009

If you're one of the thousands rushing to book a last-minute break to escape yet another wet summer at home, remember you can save money on holiday insurance.

Travel companies have seen a surge in sales of foreign holidays since the Met Office admission last week that its forecast for a barbecue summer was wrong. In fact, it now believes August will be another washout.

Rather than sit it out in the rain, many Britons are snapping up late deals to Mediterranean hotspots including Spain, Turkey and Greece. Tour operators are offering last minute packages from under £200, though to get the lowest prices you need to be ready to travel at a moment's notice.

Thomson's best deals this week were typically a third cheaper than brochure prices. Most discounted holidays were to Spain and Greece where it has the greatest amount of unsold holidays.

Holiday firms say they also have hundreds of free child places still available, even during the school holidays.

In addition to picking up a cheap package, you can also save on holiday insurance. Buy a policy at the last minute and you'll get a cheaper premium because you'll have no need for cancellation cover.
