London mayoral candidate Boris Johnson has called for a new airport to be built in London to expand the city's transport connections.

Speaking to BBC Radio 4, the Conservative MP said that Heathrow should not be treated as the "only possible place" to expand London's international airport capacity.

"I think it's time that we revived the idea of a new airport, a more environmentally-friendly airport, in the Thames estuary that could deliver a long-term solution," MR Johnson stated.

The MP was responding to plans from Heathrow operator BAA and the government for the creation of a third runway at the airport.

Earlier this week, BAA submitted an application for the development of a second runway at Stansted Airport.

Following the opening of Heathrow's fifth terminal this month, the firm said that the plans formed part of its £6 billion programme of investment in its UKL airports over the next five years.
