Home swap holidaymakers reminded to book travel insurance

14/05/2009

A growing number of homeowners are swapping their house for another to cut the cost of an overseas holiday, but anyone planning a home swap should remember they still need travel insurance.

They are best advised to buy a policy as soon as they make their travel arrangements, otherwise they could find themselves out of pocket if they have to cancel and they can't switch the dates of their flight, ferry or train journey or claim a refund.

Travel insurance is also essential to provide cover for personal belongings, including baggage, and for medical emergencies – even when sticking to countries within the European Union.

Holiday home swap website, UKHolidaySwapShop.co.uk – which enables users to swap their properties only within the UK - said it had seen a spike in interest since the Met Office forecast of a hot summer. Visit Britain is predicting 20% more people will holiday at home this year.

People might not consider it necessary to take out holiday insurance for trips in the UK – especially if most of the accommodation is free – but it is still important to protect your belongings wherever you travel.

Travel insurance is available for all UK holidays that include two or more nights paid for accommodation.
