Holidaymakers accept green tourism as a mainstream idea

07/04/2008

Holidaymakers are beginning to accept the idea of green tourism as a mainstream one, rather than a niche concept, one industry expert claims.

According to the Association of British travel Agents (ABTA), the holiday industry has taken steps to promote environmentally-friendly trips, which have proved to be successful.

Frances Tuke a spokesperson for ABTA said: "In order for the industry to make any difference it has led itself and made its own inroads.

"It really has started to take off very quickly and a couple of years ago was a real tipping point. It went from being a niche idea to being a mainstream one."

He added that for green tourism to be a success it needs to be "very easy" for people to make those kinds of choices.

Mr Tuke noted that accreditation schemes are a "really good idea" for companies to show to customers what they are doing.

A Mintel report published in January 2007 revealed that over one million environmentally responsible holidays were taken in 2006.
