Holiday survey finds journey is the biggest problem

30/09/2009

Getting to and from their destination is the biggest complaint amongst holidaymakers, according to the consumer body Which? Holiday (www.which.co.uk/holiday).

Difficulties getting between their home and the airport, port, train or coach station caused the most frustration, said Which? Holiday.

We might be a nation of moaners but of the more than 5,000 consumers quizzed, just over half had no complaints with their holidays whatsoever and 60 per cent of holidaymakers who stayed in the UK were entirely satisfied with their trip.

The two-thirds of respondents who booked all or part of their holiday on line reported frustrations such as the time it took to book and also the fact that there were hidden costs that were not shown in the original price.

Holidaymakers who booked their packages with a travel agent or a tour operator also said the final cost was often more than they expected, and they complained of unhelpful staff.

Airline passengers complained of uncomfortable seats and delayed or cancelled flights were also a big grievance.

Airport queues, poor food outlets and delays at luggage carousels caused headaches for many.

Once on holiday, consumers say they are annoyed by extra charges levied when they pick up hire cars. Charges for child seats, extra drivers and collision damage waiver insurance are common complaints.

They are get upset by overcrowded visitor attractions, which many complain are badly managed. Queues here are also a problem.

The latest issue of the Which? Holiday magazine, which includes details of the survey and other news for holidaymakers, is out this week.
