Holiday firm Sun4U goes bust leaving 1,200 customers stranded abroad

13/08/2010

Earlier this summer, thousands of holidaymakers were disrupted by the collapse of Goldtrail in July, a holiday firm that specialised in packages to Greece and Turkey. Hoteliers in Greece and Turkey demanded payment from customers who had already paid for their holiday through Goldtrail.

Now another holiday firm has gone bust. Sun4U has ceased trading, leaving around 1,200 holidaymakers in a sticky spot abroad, some of which have been asked to pay for their accommodation again. Sun4U specialised in cheap package holidays on the Spanish coast and Majorca.

It is thought that Sun4U lost money after the volcanic ash cloud incident, which has now forced them to cease trading. Some customers with up and coming holidays are unsure if their holidays will go ahead. Kellie Bugby has forked out £12,000 for a group holiday, so she hopes that money hasn't just gone down the drain.

If you have booked a holiday with Sun4U, check whether or not your booking invoice is with a separate holiday firm, and if it is, contact them to find out if your holiday will still go ahead. If the holiday has been cancelled and you booked using a debit or credit card, you should be able to claim the money back through the card provider. It's not yet clear how holidaymakers stranded abroad will be returned to the UK.

The Sun4U website is advising customers to contact ABTA on 01243 621500 for more information. Anyone that has booked a flight package should contact the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) for details about their flights.

The volcanic ash cloud that closed European skies in May earlier this year caused severe disruption to the tourism industry. With the collapse of two holiday firms already this summer, how many more will hit the deck?
