Heathrow avoiding another big freeze

Airplane taking off

We can all remember the images of Heathrow airport grounding to a halt last December as a result of the heavy snowfall and it looks like they might have found a solution.

Bosses at the airport are looking to invest in underground heating in an attempt to avoid the travel chaos which forced the cancellation of 4,000 flights.

The system will involve capturing the geothermal energy from the surface of the tarmac during the summer which will in turn provide a heating capability for the winter. This is just one of the options being looked into by BAA and they have already promised to spend £50m at the airport to avoid a repeat of last year’s problems.

BAA has said that the project which is expected to be very costly could be paid for with the money that has been put aside for a facelift of the airports terminals.
