Grenada resort 'is world's greenest'

05/11/2007

The Spice Island Beach resort in Grenada is the greenest holiday destination in the world, it has been claimed.

Featuring a solar-heated pool, which is treated by salt rather than chlorine and fitted with energy saving lightbulbs, the Spice Island resort topped a poll for green hotels conducted by the Reuters news agency.

Other notable mentions went to the Whitepod hotel in Switzerland, which is electricity-free and uses sustainably harvested wood to fuel its log fires and the Adrere Amellal hotel in Egypt, where profits are used to fund sustainable farming and community projects.

Meanwhile, the Chumbe Island Coral Park in Zanzibar, Tanzania was praised for its ranger program whereby locals are educated about the need to stop illegal fishing to preserve the reef's marine ecology. The resort was also singled out for its rooftop rainwater collection system.

The poll was published in Travel + Leisure magazine and was compiled with the assistance of environmental group Conservation International.
