Gap year travellers told insurance is a must

08/04/2008

Gap year travellers have been advised that taking out an insurance policy for when they are abroad is "an absolute must" by one industry expert this week.

STA travel, which specialises in discounted travel for students and young people added that those taking gap years should try to plan "as much of their trip as possible in advance".

"travel insurance is an absolute must for any traveller to ensure they are covered for every eventuality wherever they are in the world, " a spokesperson for STA travel stressed.

Gap year travellers were also advised to subscribe to RSS live feeds on their mobile phones, which will keep them up-to-date with good deals on flight tickets, amongst other things.

According to research released by volunteer travel operator i-to-i, 29 per cent of people had plans to leave their jobs and take a year out in 2007 – a ten per cent increase compared with 2006.

Furthermore, the Training and Development Agency for Schools published research in January 2007, which revealed that 32 per cent of graduates are now opting to take a gap year before embarking on a career.
