Foreign Office updates travel advice for France and Germany

04/10/2010

Two bomb threats in so many weeks have caused disruption at the Eiffel Tower in the French capital. Suspected al-Qaeda terrorist plots have been uncovered, which targeted areas of France and Germany. As such, the Foreign Office has updated its travel advice in France and Germany by declaring that there is a high threat of terrorism in both European countries.

No bombs were found in the Eiffel Tower, but bomb experts were forced to close the tower to investigate after an anonymous phone call alerted them to a potential threat.

Terrorist attacks could be indiscriminate, and investigations have revealed that terrorist attacks could occur on public transportation and tourist attractions in France and Germany. The threat of terrorism is also high in Sweden.

American citizens have been advised to travel cautiously if they plan to visit Europe. The current threat of terrorism is likely to have a detrimental effect on tourism in Europe.

If you plan to travel to Europe, remember to remain vigilant in public areas, particularly places that are frequented by tourists. If you notice anything suspicious, report it immediately to the local authorities. In the unlikely event of a terrorist attack occurring, remember to remain calm and follow police instructions.

Before you travel, keep up to date with travel advice for the country you plan to visit. The Foreign Office regularly updates their travel advice by country on their website to include details of terrorist threats and other situations that might affect travellers, such as natural disasters or public sector strikes.
