Following the PM to the Lakes? Make sure you have travel insurance

23/07/2009

Prime Minister Gordon Brown is swapping the Suffolk seaside for a holiday in the Lake District this summer, but anyone planning to follow in his footsteps is best advised to take out travel insurance.

Often people don't think they need to be insured for holidays at home, but a number of things can go wrong – as even the PM has discovered.

Two years ago Mr Brown was forced to cancel his holiday when, just 4 hours after arriving in Dorset, he was called back to Downing Street to try to avert the foot-and-mouth crisis.

Travel insurance provides cancellation cover for illness or injury for anyone booking accommodation for at least two nights. It also provides protection against theft or loss of personal belongings repatriation cover and compensation for travel delays.

Many of those holidaying in the UK are expected to be caught up in traffic jams next month as 300 miles of motorway are being dug up in the north west of England alone. This will affect travel to the Lake District and elsewhere.

There is also likely to be engineering works on many rail lines this summer, making travel chaos a possibility.
