Flying BA? Better make sure you've got holiday insurance

15/07/2009

Travel insurance is an essential purchase for anyone flying with British Airways this summer as staff are threatening a series of strikes that could jeopardize the travel plans of tens of thousands of holidaymakers.

A good travel insurance policy will compensate passengers for delays caused by strikes and refund the cost of their trip if they decide to cancel their holiday after a delay of 24 hours or more.

However anyone who has already bought tickets must buy travel insurance a.s.a.p as cover is only provided to those who take out a policy before the possibility of strike action is confirmed.

BA staff are fighting the airline's plans to shed 3,700 jobs to save £220m after making a loss of £401m in the last financial year.

Hit hard by the recession and drop in bookings, the airline is also believed to be looking for a further £500m from investors.

Unions have offered instead to consider pay-cuts and a 2-year pay freeze to avoid widespread redundancies.

Talks between the unions and the airline's management are continuing this week, but if they can't reach an agreement staff are expected to strike.

Insurewithease customers can also buy insurance against scheduled airline failure, which will refund them if their airline goes bust before or during their trip.
