The reappearance of an ash cloud from a volcano in Cordon Caulle in southern Chile has caused significant disruption to air travel around Australia and New Zealand. A number of Australia’s major domestic carriers which include Qantas and Virgin have all suspended or cancelled flights.
The ash cloud is expected to cause further disruption to regional air travel for several more days. Thousands of passengers have been stranded as hundreds of planes have had to be grounded in the last week due to the ash cloud. An estimated 40,000 people have been forced to wait at airports or find other means of travel as flights have been cancelled.
Passengers are being advised to check with their airlines before going to the airport.
