Ferries have been championed by one industry expert this week for the flexibility and freedom they offer holidaymakers.
The Port of Dover highlighted that holidaymakers who set sail rather than jet-off benefit from being able to take their cars abroad with them.
"You have the freedom and flexibility to travel where you want, when you want, and you always have your possessions with you. It gives you that freedom and flexibility, " said Keith Southey, public relations manager for the Port of Dover.
At Dover ferries depart across the channel at twenty minute intervals, around the clock meaning the holidaymakers can turn up at any time of the day and purchase a ticket.
Ferries from the port travel to Calais, Dunkirk and Boulogne and the shortest crossing is to Calais, taking just 55 minutes.
The Port of Dover released figures last month which revealed that the number of motorists who used the port in 2007 rose by seven per cent.
