FCO warns tourists on holiday in the Maldives to remain vigilant

A holiday in the Maldives is popular with holidaymakers searching for the ultimate relaxing beach holiday, accompanied by brilliant sunshine and a warm turquoise sea. Many spend their honeymoon on the islands, while others book a holiday in the Maldives simply to get away from it all.

In February this year, the archipelago reported a record number of tourists taking a holiday in the Maldives. The occupancy rate in the 91 resorts in the Maldives was at 95%. Many resorts are steeped in luxury – some have private villas that sit on stilts in the surf, while others have beach bungalows nestled in the sand.

But these tranquil islands have been overshadowed by political unrest in recent months. The capital island of Male has been experiencing disruption since June, and demonstrations have left nine police officers and six civilians injured. President Nasheed and opposition MPs are in the middle of a political disagreement.

Most tourists that go on holiday in the Maldives fly into Male International Airport and travel onto their resort without entering the capital. Tourists shouldn’t be affected by the political demonstrations, but the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) has advised travellers to exercise caution and avoid large gatherings.
