Cold snap leads to surge in bookings for winter sun holidays

14/12/2010

Britain has been experiencing its coldest winter since 1981, and the chilly temperatures have led to a rise in the number of people searching for winter sun holidays. With more cold weather on the way, Brits will continue to seek winter sun in the Spanish Islands, Mexico, Egypt and Thailand.

Many tour operators have received an increase in the number of searches for winter sun holidays on their websites. The number of people searching for winter sun holidays on Travelsupermarket has risen by 35% in the last couple of weeks, while searches for Spanish holidays with Co-operative Travel have risen by 12%.

Even Sharm el Sheik has experienced a rise in visitor numbers this winter in spite of the recent shark attacks that devastated the Red Sea resort. The shark attacks injured three and left an elderly German woman dead.

To make winter sun holidays even more appealing, some destinations have lowered their prices on package holidays due to a slump in business over the summer months as the economic downturn put some people off travelling. Some hotels along the Spanish coastline are offering some great family deals. A family of four can stay for as little as £388 per week.

Cold weather in Britain often encourages people to take holidays in warmer climates, but not everyone is on the hunt for winter sun this year. While the cold weather is encouraging some to take winter sun holidays, the weather has put others off travelling. When snow earlier in the month closed UK airports, many holidaymakers experienced severe disruption to their journeys. With more snow predicted, some people would rather not risk taking a holiday abroad.
