Brits should insure their items for when they are in and out of their homes, one expert has advised.
A survey conducted by Zurich found that a typical Brit carries personal items worth nearly £1,000 with them when they leave home, highlighting the importance of being insured.
The insurance firm noted that some home contents policies extend to cover items when they taken away from the owner's property.
Mike Quinton, managing director for direct and partnerships at Zurich, said: "We all need to be vigilant and make sure we're discreet with these expensive items to avoid being targeted by muggers."
His comments are particularly poignant considering the survey found that 13 per cent of people are now carrying more expensive items this year than in 2007.
Furthermore, 57 per cent of respondents underestimated the value of their possessions, while nearly three-quarters said they did not know how much their belongings are worth.
Zurich has recently advised festival goers that around ten per cent of people have had possessions stolen at these kinds of events.
In order to avoid being the victim of such theft, those attending festivals were warned to check what their insurance policies will cover them for in advance.
