Backpackers must budget for travel insurance

15/10/2007

Students planning backpacking holidays have been advised to budget for adequate travel insurance as part of their travel plans.

According to Phil Murray, director of gapadvice.org, travel insurance and flights are the chief factors that must be considered in budgets before embarking on trips.

However, while budgeting is important, it need not be so rigorous that you miss out on excursions or activities that you will regret not having done later.

He said: "It makes sense to work out your daily, weekly, monthly costs and stick to it.

"However, if you are tempted to go over budget you may well go for it, if it is something which you feel you will regret not having done when you return."

Figures from gapadvice.org showed that the average 18-25 year old spends between £3,000 and £4,000 on their gap year.
