Aer Lingus - Business to remain strong

Despite an increase in landing charges announced by Heathrow operator BAA, the chief executive of Aer Lingus has claimed that the airline's business will continue to be strong.

Speaking to BBC Radio 4's Today programme, Dermot Mannion said that although the firm does not welcome the charges, demand for the airline's services at Heathrow is high.

"Business at all of our Heathrow routes is strong and we expect it to stay that way," Mr Mannion stated.

Aer Lingus will continue to be a "very significant player" at the airport in the future, he added.

Mr Mannion also said that the airline was "committed" to Shannon Airport, even though it had relocated one of its routes to Belfast.

The airline was established by the Irish government in April 1936 to offer services to and from Ireland.

Its maiden flight was between Dublin and Bristol on May 27th 1936.
