'A reputable company is better' when hiring a car

13/02/2008

When people are hiring a car abroad it is always best to go with a large, well known company, says an expert.

A spokesman from the Association of British Insurers (ABI) has warned that holidaymakers may not be covered under their own car insurance policy and that local companies may not explain the level of cover offered.

"It's always sensible to go to one of the big dealers – the Avis or the Hertz of this world.

"They all have a network of reputable associates and offices in most European countries."

The spokesperson said that when getting a hire car the "obvious thing to do" is to go with a reputable company.

Whilst the ABI reassured travellers that local firms would still be reputable it urged people to check the policy documents before hiring a vehicle.

Some of the most popular countries in which Brits hire a car are Spain, USA, Italy and Portugal, according to EasyCar.
